They were nuclear
attacks ordered by Harry S. Truman, president of the United States, against the
Empire of Japan. The attacks were
carried out on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, which contributed, together
with the Soviet-Japanese War, to the surrender of Japan and the end of World
War II.
It's sad that the
United States had to resort to this where a lot of people died, but on the
other hand it marked the end of the Second World War where many people had
already died.
